Hi. I’m Dan. I’m all snarky and stuff.

I’ve always thought life was precisely what it appeared to be. Normal. Routine. Dull.

Safe.

I’ve worked to get by, remunerated my bills, and made sure the mortgage was (usually) in on time. That’s how I’ve lived from day to day, enjoying the little wonders in life and being happy with what I had.

Until one winter night when the universe pointed a finger at me and laughed at my stupidity.

Without word or warning I found myself in the middle of a struggle older than humane civilization amid warring factions of vampires. At each turn I ran into new horizons, both horrific and lovely.

A concealed world opened up in front of me, full of magic and mayhem, vampires, faeries, dragons, even unicorns. UNICORNS.

I know, right?

Uh, anyway…

I’ve chronicled the struggle to save my friends, family, loved ones, and perchance even myself. It’s a tale full of comedy and fear, adventure and sex.

Like life itself, each moment has the potential to be beautiful.

4Surprisingly Enjoyable
By K.W. McCabe
Dan leads a pretty normal life: he works in a nursing home, makes nice with his coworkers, and cherishes his wife, Anna. Dan and Anna have an open relationship; with Anna’s permission, he persues Gabrielle, his sexy coworker.

As a result of their dalliance, Gabrielle feels protective towards him and his wife. The following day, during what was supposed to be a routine morning at work, a gunman tries to rob the nursing home. Dan enters into the scene and Gabrielle goes into a protective vampiric rage that ends in a cold-blooded killing which changes Dan’s life forever.

From then on Dan must learn what he means to a society of vampires at war with one another and what, exactly, is his place in a community full of beings that could crush him with like a bug. He must understand who he is, become who he is supposed to be, and move into his destiny.

I purchased Beautiful: An Urban Legend on Amazon during it’s free download period. I was a little bit skeptical- I’ve come across alot of junk lately- but I was pleasantly surprised. I was originally going to give this story three stars: it does alot of over-explaining of Dan’s thought process- a technique which I found a little irritating as I had figured out most of the reasons why he took certain actions without his needing to explain it to me. There were also some typos and a few strange sentence structure issues as well.

But by the end of the book- I was smiling. Now, this is my own personal reaction to the story. Anyone else might find they enjoyed it less or more than I did. But I couldn’t bring myself to give it three stars just based on grammar when I enjoyed it so much that I was smiling at the end.

Dan’s character was likeable, his interactions with his wife were endearing, and although I was a little skeptical about the open relationship- it was tastefully done. His excursions into the paranormal world were believable, the climax to the story was satisfying and I’m actually looking forward to the next tale with Dan, Anna, and Gabrielle.

Go figure.

4A fun, light read
By Blue
TL;DR: Beautiful is fun novel and certainly worth reading. I’ll happily purchase any further books in the series.

I enjoyed this book. I’ve been reading Joshua’s Living with the Dead blog for quite some time and this book has the same comfortable writing style.

My only real criticism is that Dan is too similar to LwtD’s lead character. I realise that’s because Joshua is drawing from the same source (ie himself), and I’d like to see that next step into creating a lead character that isn’t so clearly based on the writer. That said, I was happy to see that Dan doesn’t have the totally idiotic pig-headed stubborness that lead characters often display (especially female leads, why is that?).

Dan is really likeable, and there’s some sweet turns of phrase that tweaked my sense of humour. I love the geek culture references and although the start was initially slow, the pace picked up before I got bored. The reveal and acceptance of the hero’s new reality was nicely done; it was refreshing not watch the him go through the whole ‘OMG, this isn’t real’, followed by the inevitable stuff up before he actually starts to believe. I also liked Anna – she’s obviously got reserves of strength and hopefully we’ll see her have a more pivotal role in later books.

This book was great for a quiet Sunday morning at home, with a hot chocolate by my side and the cat on my lap.

4Got me.
By DeeWNY
I bought this book because I love Guess’ Living with the Dead series and when I bought Book 4 of LWTD I thought, hey, gotta support one of my favorite authors.

I hesitated though, because while I love the zombie thing, vampires make me think of drippy teen-age angst-ridden romance that takes itself too seriously.

But it’s by Joshua Guess- so I figured on my last day of vacation I’d get some work done in the garden and start Beautiful. It’s too early to work in the garden anyway. And darned if Guess’ new series hasn’t pulled me in. He really knows how to tell a story. And his vampires aren’t morose. Neither are the other beings, human and otherwise.

As noted in previous reviews, Dan the protagonist sounds an awful lot like Josh from LWTD, but he’s got a sly sense of humor, and I like his wife, Anna a lot.

I’ll be buying Book 2 as soon as it comes out. This is a fun read.
